From the original insert: "The music heard on this recording is part of a concert given in January 1959 at the Nonagon Gallery in New York. It was one of a series called Jazz Profiles which featured Cecil Taylor, Mal Waldron, Tony Scott, The Modern Jazz Quartet and others. Charles Mingus believes all his various Jazz Workshop ensembles are most advantageously recorded not in a studio but on location and with a live, responsive audience. This is certainly born out by the present recording, and such a preference is, of course, a comment on Mingus's method of working".
