American Doo-Wop bass singer and founder the group The Crests. Used the stage name J. T. Carter and Jay Carter for writing credits and earlier performances Born 1940 in Brooklyn, New York, USA. Carter was one of three children born to farmers in Plains, GA. When he was 3, his family moved to Jersey City, New Jersey.. At the age 7, his family moved again, this time to the the east side of NYC. During junior high/high school, he met Patricia Van Dross, Johnny Maestro, Tom Gough (2), and Harold Torres (2). The quintet started singing together, and soon started to perform locally. After being heard by the wife of orchestra leader Al Browne, the group began recording with Browne's orchestra on the Joyce (2) label, then on Coed.
