Notes

Ravinia Festival The Concertos by Lalo and Saint-Saëns were performed on July 2, 1988 at the Ravinia Festival in Highland Park, Illinois, James Levine, Music Director. The recording of these works was made possible by a generous gift from Dr. and Mrs. Edwin J. DeCosta. The Ravinia Festival, a leading international festival of the arts, is the oldest of the major festivals in the United States. Established in 1936 in Highland Park, Illinois, 20 miles north of Chicago, Ravinia enjoys a worldwide reputation as one of the most innovative and musically diversified of American festivals. It is situated in natural woodland where a large open-air pavilion, an intimate theatre and an enclosed small concert hall on the grounds provide acoustically excellent facilities for symphonic programs, opera in concert performances, chamber music and recitals, symphonic "pops", contemporary and popular music. Since Ravinia's founding, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra has been engaged for summer residency. Both James Levine, Ravinia's Music Director, and Edward Gordon, Executive Director, have worked together in developing the "Music from Ravinia" recordings. With a tradition of presenting gifted young artists as well as the stars of the world's concert and opera stages, Ravinia engaged the 17-year-old cellist, Matt Haimovitz, for a Ravinia/Chicago Symphony Orchestra debut which has resulted in this recording. Ravinia also presents other major orchestras from the USA, Britain, Europe and Israel. Through their generous support, Dr. and Mrs. Edwin J. De Costa have been closely associated with recordings of music performed at Ravinia. According to Mrs. DeCosta, "We love to share our joy in Ravinia's beautiful concerts with a world of listeners through recordings. We feel privileged to be a part of these recording projects."
