Notes

Liner notes: Insert: The end of 2004 was not a fun time in my life. There were a string of questionable relationships, a death that had knocked the wind out of my guts, and fights between myself and my occasional bandmate/constant confidant Chris Zabriskie. The aforementioned arguments had gotten severe enough that during one particularly troublesome row - possibly influenced by an unnamed third-party that enjoyed watching things burn - I was left to question who was actually steering the Marc With a C ship, so to speak. On the heels of the troubled original “Bubblegum Romance” sessions, I refused to find myself in a position where I wouldn’t have the final say-so over my art and my connection to the listeners. So I killed Marc With a C. Booked a “final show” and everything. It took place around February of 2005. At the time, I meant it. My plan was to destroy what I’d done as Marc With a C and rebuild things in a different way. A way that would allow the music to come first for all that would stumble upon it. The plan was to have a website that was the home of “Bunnythumbs”, The name of my provisional new project. Each day, I’d give myself a set amount of time with a four-track cassette recorder. Whatever came out of me in the allotted time was the finished project for the day. I’d be free to stripe ideas for parts aling the way, but ultimately, the goal was to come up with melodic and mysterious lo-fi things… but it’d take a lot of trial and error, trying to self-record on tape and making it sound like something that someone else might want to hear. I amassed hours of music. Some of it was listenabl, some of it was nothing more than tonal experiments. I’d planned to kick off the website with a completed downloadable album of ten songs with no fanfare, and no mention of Marc With a C at all. If people stumbled upon it, cool. Afterwards, tracks would be uploaded as they were finished. All without context. It was up to you, the person searching for new music, to try these things out and see how they fit together. In the days before Bandcamp and SoundCloud, it was a weirder idea than you’d think. Songs like “God Save The Queen From Navy Seals”, “This Is Hopeless” and “I Am Going To Fuck Your Life Up” came from this venture. And then I found out that at the time, pretty much any website that contained the term “Bunnythumbs” led you to pornography and the entire idea was scrapped. At Chris’s behest, I played at a “going away” show for him as he moved to the west coast. He wanted me to play as Marc With a C, though if memory serves, I only played covers and unreleased material. Either way, the jig was up. I was back in the Marc With a C groove, but the new songs didn’t really fit what people expected from me. I used that as an excuse to continue to experiment with ideas, themes and tones which one normally wouldn’t find on my albums. Most of the Bunnythumbs material was inherently dark due to my unhappiness and loneliness at the time. Then I met Nicole. Grey turned to technicolor, I fell in love, and started writing songs that weren’t so bleak. Probably wore all of my self-discovery of the time a bit too plainly on my sleeve, but one can’t complain that this album was dishonest, for sure. For fun, I’ve included some bonus material that would have been on the “Bunnythumbs” album. And a weird one. “Bubblegum Romance” made me the artist that I am, but this album helped me realize that I could do whatever I wanted. For better or for worse, it was my art. And for the first time, I felt like I was truly in control.
