"Different Trains" was commissioned by Betty Freeman for the Kronos Quartet. It was composed from January through August 1988 and is about 27 minutes long. "Electric Counterpoint" (1987) was commissioned by the Brooklyn Academy of Music's Next Wave Festival for guitarist Pat Metheny. It was composed during the summer of 1987.
