World Cassette Club

Parent label: World Record Club

A division of the Australian branch of World Record Club. This sub-label was created in July 1970, when the World Record Club began issuing cassettes. From 1970 to 1974, cassettes had their own catalogue number, and cassettes were issued alongside WRC LPs with completely different numbers, whether first editions or reissues. From 1975, WRC LPs were given a number beginning R-0... R-00001 to R-02330 were reissues, while those from R-02331 onwards were (mostly) new editions. Cassettes were given the same number, with a "C " prefix instead of "R-". There is also a transition period, which lasted until June 1975, where both numbers are given (reissues often did not amend this on the artwork). When there are two numbers, use the four-digit number as the primary one - this number is more meaningful for the catalogue, as there should be a cassette for every number. But not all WRC LPs were issued on cassette. So while the 1969-1974 run should be a full run of sequential numbers from 0001 to ~0700, the post-1975 C series has large gaps in the numbering sequence (there are also large gaps in the vinyl numbers, as the numbers would jump ahead from catalogue to catalogue, and WRC sold other items like books, with the same numbering but different prefixes... e.g. D for books, A for sundry items). The club itself becomes less distinct as a separate entity over time, with later cassettes showing only "World Cassette" on the cover, and "World Record Club" the licensing text. When crediting, use "World Cassette Club" as the label, and add "World Record Club" as the Record Company.
