The former monastery is situated in a small town of Plasy in the Western Bohemia, Czech republic. It is the first Cistercian monastery in Bohemia founded by a ruler – the prince Vladislav II. in 1144. The monastery was burnt down in the beginning of the 15th century by the Hussites. Between 1661 and 1785 a grand reconstructing effort took place according to schemes by J.B. Mathey, J.B. Santini and K. I. Dientzenhoffer. The monastery was disestablished on 9th November 1785 by the ruler Josef II. and became a residence of the chancellor Metternich and his family, who have also established their family tomb here.
