American recording studio, located in the Van Nuys district of Los Angeles, California, opened 1969, closed in May 2011, and reopened in early 2017.
For the similarly named Tokyo-based studio, please use Sound City Studio.
The studio was founded in 1969 by Joe Gottfried and Tom Skeeter, in a facility that had previously been a production factory of the English musical instrument manufacturer Vox. The studio was privately held from 1970, until it closed its commercial studio services in May 2011, and much of the equipment was sold off. Dave Grohl purchased the custom Neve 8078 Console from Studio A, installing it in his private recording studio. Between 2011 and 2016, the studio was reserved for the exclusive use of its tenants, Fairfax Recordings. In early 2017, Sandy Skeeter (daughter of Tom Skeeter) and Olivier Chastan reopened the studio. In 2018, Tony Berg and Blake Mills took over the lease.
Renowned for its signature analog sound, which appeared on more than 100 certified gold- and platinum-certified albums. In 2013, a documentary on the studio was made by Grohl entitled "1824489."
