Griogair Labhruidh

Griogair Labhruidh (also credited as “Griogair”) is a Scottish Gaelic singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer from Scotland. Born into the Labhruidh (Lawrie) piping family of Ballachulish, he was raised in a household rich in Highland musical tradition, and trained with leading pipers including his father, Gordon Labhruidh, and John D. Burgess. His mother’s side (MacFhiachair/Ross) also carries a strong heritage of song and piping from Argyll and Skye. Raised on the shores of Loch Lomond, Griogair’s artistic journey spans Gaelic song, piping, hip-hop, and jazz, shaped by mentors such as Alan MacDonald and Norman MacLean. His early album Dàil-Riata (2007) established him as a compelling voice in Gaelic music, followed by national TV appearances and a period with Gaelic supergroup Dàimh. He became known for blending Gaelic tradition with contemporary forms, delivering a notable Gaelic rap on BBC during the 2014 Commonwealth Games and experimenting with hip-hop. Griogair was a core creative voice on Afro Celt Sound System’s album The Source (2016), and has performed internationally at venues including Glastonbury Festival and the Royal Albert Hall. He is also known for his work on the TV series Outlander, contributing original lyrics, Gaelic vocals and arrangements to a global audience, and has performed with major orchestras such as the BBC Scottish Symphony and London’s Philharmonia. His forthcoming self-produced album, Solace, features international collaborations and draws on years of creative exploration, fusing Highland tradition with modern production and global influences.
