Julia Goldstein (b. 1964, Moscow) is a German pianist and music educator of Russian descent based in Altdorf, daughter of renowned violin virtuoso Boris Goldstein (1922—1987) and niece of violinist Mikhail Goldstein (1917—1989) and pianist Henrietta Goldstein (1911—1991). She was married to German pianist Wolfgang Manz (b. 1960) and known professionally as "Julia Goldstein-Manz" at that time; Julia is the mother of clarinetist Sebastian Manz (b. 1986), violinist Larissa Manz (b. 1987), and cellist Dominik Manz (b. 1993). Goldstein began studying piano at the age of five in Moscow, taking lessons with Nune Khachaturian, daughter of the famous Soviet-Armenian composer Aram Khatchaturian (1903—1978). In 1974, when Julia was ten, her family immigrated from the Soviet Union and settled in Germany; Goldstein won several notable European contests before turning 14, such as "Jugend Musiziert," the Grotrian Steinweg Competition, and "Concertino Praga" in Czechoslovakia. In 1980, 16-year-old Julia toured Portugal with Niedersächsisches Jugendsinfonieorchester. The following year, Goldstein won the Steinway Competition in Hamburg and finished third at the International Alfred Cortot Youth Pianist Competition in Milan. Soon after, Julia enrolled at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hannover to continue her formal education. In 1984, as a German People's Study Foundation stipendiat, she went to England to study with Sulamita Aronovsky (1929—2022) at the Royal Northern College Of Music in Manchester. The same year, Goldstein graduated in Hanover under Karl-Heinz Kämmerling (1930—2012), passing the state exams in 1986. Julia continued her postgraduate studies at Folkwang College in Essen in Boris Bloch's masterclass, earning her degree in 1991. Julia extensively collaborated with her father, including regular concerts and 1985 recordings of the "Violin Sonatas" by Johannes Brahms and César Franck, released on LP by Apollon. Over the years, she performed with numerous other notable musicians, including Sabine Meyer, Christian Tetzlaff, Christoph Marks, Julius Berger, Alexander Rudin, and Kathrin Rabus. Julia Goldstein is one of the Steinway & Sons endorsing artists.
