German pianist, composer and teacher, born 8 October 1862 in Hamburg, Germany and died 29 April 1942 in Vienna, Austria. Was a pupil of Nicolas Rubinstein at the Moscow Conservatory in 1879-81, before studying under Franz Liszt for several months. In the closing years of the 19th century, Sauer won a sensational reputation in England, presenting the Liszt concertos many times. Later, he became head of the pianoforte department at the Vienna Conservatory. Noted for his wonderfully neat technique and his accuracy, he made about 30 recordings.
