Alan Jenkins

British doyen of brass band critics, conductor, writer, arranger, composer, tuba player and general man of letters. He started his professional career as Principal Tuba with the Hallé Orchestra, a position he held with the London Symphony Orchestra where he was also a member of the orchestra's Board of Directors (1963-1967). He studied choral music at the University Of Texas, Austin. Upon his return to England, in 1982, he became a lecturer and head of vocal studies at Huddersfield Technical College from which position he retired in the summer of 1994 in order to concentrate on his work as a journalist with Brass Band World.
