American songwriter, composer, lyricist & orchestrator. Born c.1897. Died August 31, 1957 at the age of 60. Best known for co-writing the song "Don't Cry Baby" with James P. Johnson and Stella Unger. The song was first sung by Bessie Smith in 1929 but became a hit for Etta James in 1961. Aretha Franklin also charted with it in 1962. Bernie began working in Hollywood in the 1940's as an orchestrator but later as a movie producer with Dave Fleischer of Fleischer Studios fame, the film and animation studio. He was also a casting director and theatrical agent for PRC Studios, Inc.
