Dr. Dre is the stage name of Andre Young (born February 18, 1965, in Compton, California, USA), an American record producer, rapper, and entrepreneur. He is credited as a critical figure in the popularization of West Coast G-funk, a style of rap music characterized as synthesizer-based with slow, heavy beats. From the 1980s to the 1990s, he was formerly a respective member of the World Class Wreckin' Cru and N.W.A. In 1991, following his departure from N.W.A. and , Dre co-founded with the controversial Suge Knight and The D.O.C. In 1996, after releasing 1992's The Chronic, he left Death Row and founded his label, . He has since produced albums for and/or overseen the careers of many rappers, including Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Xzibit, 50 Cent, The Game, Busta Rhymes, and Kendrick Lamar. In 2006, he and co-founder Jimmy Iovine co-founded Beats Electronics. In 2014, Beats was acquired by computer giant Apple for $3.24 billion, making Dr. Dre, one of the richest figures in the American hip-hop scene.
