Esa Pietilä, born in 1964, is a Finnish saxophonist and composer known for his boundary-crossing approach between jazz and contemporary music. Active on the international scene, he has developed a personal musical language that blends improvisation, composition, and sonic exploration, with a particular focus on the tenor saxophone, for which he continues to expand the repertoire.
Pietilä has composed extensively for orchestras, numerous chamber ensembles and soloists such as Avanti! Chamber Orchestra, Fanfare Du Loup and UMO Jazz Orchestra, creating hybrid works that merge jazz and classical music. He has performed as soloist with a range of top orchestras including Kuopio Symphony, Lappeenranta City Orchestra, Pori Sinfonietta and Saimaa Sinfonietta. He has collaborated with leading composers, conductors and musicians including Esa-Pekka Salonen (conductor), Kalevi Aho (composer) and Magnus Lindberg (composer).
He also writes for and plays saxophone with a number of high-profile modern jazz groups including Sonic Decode with guitarist Raoul Björkenheim, Liberty Ship and Esa Pietilä Trio, and presents improvised solo concerts displaying a quicksilver imagination and questing mind. His work, recognized with the Yrjö Jazz Prize in 2016, is distinguished by a constant search for new forms and sonic textures.
