Yánnis Papaïoannou was a Greek bouzouki player and a prominent rebetiko composer, lyricist & singer. Born January 18, 1913 in Kios, Asia Minor, Ottoman Empire - Died August 3, 1972 in Pérama, Piraeus, Greece.
At the end of 1936, Ευάγγελος Γρυπάρης introduced Yannis Papaïoannou to Μίνως Μάτσας. Papaïoannou played the first song he had ever written, Φαληριώτισσα, to Matsas, who liked it, and within a few days the song was recorded, released and became a huge hit. It was his first recording.
