Sterling Bruce Conaway
Jazz banjoist, guitarist, and mandolin player, born 1898 in Washington. Played with Duke Ellington in Washington c. 1920 before moving to Chicago, where he played with Carroll Dickerson c. 1923. During late 1920s and the 1930s worked mainly in Europe, with Noble Sissle 1931, Freddy Johnson (5) 1933-1934 and Leon Abbey 1937 among others. His brother Lincoln Conaway was a banjoist and guitarist.
