American rhythm & blues and gospel singer. Born March 21, 1921, in Minjo Junction, Ohio, died June 21, 2008, in Detroit, Michigan. Reed grew up singing in her local church choir. She was mentored by a blind gospel singer, Prof. Harold Boggs, before winning an audition to become the vocalist with Sonny Thompson's band. Reed scored two national hits with Thompson in 1952, "I'll Drown in My Tears," which reached #5 on the Billboard R&B chart, and "Let’s Call It A Day," which hit #7 on the same chart. Reed was married to Thompson and often recorded with him. She also recorded often with Freddie King. She is sometimes credited as Lulu Reed.
