Catulo da Paixão Cearense

Catulo Da Paixão Cearense was a Brazilian poet, composer, singer, and pioneering guitarist whose work helped reform the modinha and establish the guitar in Brazil’s elite music culture. Born in São Luís, Maranhão, in 1863, he moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1880, where he immersed himself in the city’s choro and serenata scenes alongside figures like Anacleto de Medeiros and Joaquim Calado. A self-taught musician and prolific writer, he began composing modinhas such as “Ao Luar” around 1880 and authored influential collections like O Cantor Fluminense and Cancioneiro Popular. His enduring works include the lyrics for “Flor Amorosa” and the celebrated toada “Luar do Sertão,” created in partnership with João Pernambuco in 1914, a song often regarded as emblematic of Brazilian culture. Beyond his musical output, Catulo published poetry, founded a school in Piedade, and held a public role as a teacher and librarian—activities that reflect his broader cultural contributions.
