American civil rights leader, activist, and Baptist minister, born January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia. King played a key role in the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955-1956, which marked his emergence as a national civil rights leader. He co-founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957 and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. His leadership was instrumental in advancing civil rights legislation in the United States. King’s speeches have been issued on numerous releases, his best-remembered address being 'I Have a Dream,' delivered at the Lincoln Memorial on August 28, 1963, during the March on Washington. He was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968.
