American songwriter. In 1929 he co-authored his most famous song, "When You're Smiling." Born August 10, 1897 in Chicago, Illinois, USA. Died February 22, 1988 in Newport Beach, California, USA. As with many other of Shay's songs, "When You're Smiling" was a collaboration with Joe Goodwin and Mark Fisher (3). Shay took up the piano as a youngster and attended the Bush Conservatory of Music in Chicago, before moving to New York to become a songwriter. In the 1930s, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer hired him to become their music director. He published over 300 songs.
