Math rock/post-rock band from Fremont, California. Started around 1993, inactive since 2002. Originally assembled in 1993 Fremont, SF with members Marty Anderson, Jay Pellicci and Ian Pellicci as just friends making experimental music, Studio Happy Mix and the short-lived Great Green Geisha Growers all occurred here, the band didn't have a name but its considered dilute by Marty. In 1996 Marty would fall in love for the first time and be gone for a few months leading to the detour/stepping stone of "Drag Inferno" headed by Jared, friend of the band, this band added rock structures to the experimentation they were used to, Marty would come back, Jay recruited his work friend, who he played with a couple of times, Craig Colla to play a guitar solo Jared couldn't play and sing at the same time live, eventually Marty would start heading the band again as Jared had to step down due to personal issues eventually ending Drag Inferno, Marty would also get diagnosed with Crohn's Disease around this time. With Craig invited to play bass for the new band, the main four are together, they made an entire album called HER (1997) which sounded too much like sonic youth and they were evolving so fast they moved on, not without releasing 2 tracks on the comp CD we no need no stinking badgers, they also decided on the name dilute, Marty around this time also had a spiritual event on a greyhound bus, the style of dilute came to him, Saving a life, Sold, 0 vs. 1... Fibonacci sequence, chaos theory and esoteric interpretations of physics and spirituality, it kicked off the band. The band would work on their first album from April 1997 to September 1999, both Ian and Jay interned at The Music Annex which is where they recorded this, releasing their first album The Gypsy Valentine Curve at the end of 1999 to the start of the 2000s, they distributed it to zines & labels, when the guy running Copper Press Cory took interest, he started 54º40' Or Fight! and helped distribute the CD for the band in August of 2001, being on a label helped being reviewed and reach more people. After finishing their first album, the band was already working on their next release before even getting on a label (around 1999 to 2000), the band at this point though was already struggling, Craig and Ian getting serious with their girlfriends, Marty struggling with Crohn's, discussions about moving the band to Portland, making no money and having been active for around 3-4 years with barely any results (even longer if you consider the years without Craig), this was the context in which their next album was recorded. Grape Blueprints Pour Spinach Olive Grape was recorded "prematurely" for this reason, the end was being felt by everyone, recorded in June to July of 2001, released in October 2001 to decent receptions, the band headed into a US tour in early 2001, it ended up a complete bust, nobody heard of them and shows somewhat empty, they got held in the Canadian border and threatened with jail, this was too much, eventually Marty decided to take a break, a temporary hiatus, but the band never got back again truly, dissolved. the band was planning a third release, an EP where sold and sickroom would be featured, but they dissolved before then. On the subject of the Japanese reissue of The Gypsy Valentine Curve, Toad Records approached the band about it, and apparently designed everything about it, they also got the chance to finally remove improsivisations as they regretted including it and consider it filler, included a bonus live mini CD EP Live Recordings, released April 2003. On the subject of the live split Hella + Dilute, both bands opened for Rumah Sakit in 2002, they played 6 to 5 shows together, Mitch Cheney was starting his label Sickroom Records with Steve Sostak and wanted it as one of the first releases, which happened later in October 2003 On the subject of the reissue of Grape Blueprints Pour Spinach Olive Grape, Naked Ally Records asked the band for bonus tracks for the digital release, the band were more hands off with this release. On the subject of release 8037096, it was a one of release by Marty on bandcamp, compiling both the Live split with Hella & the mini CD EP in a slightly different quality/mastering, it also included 2 unreleased live tracks.
