Carpenter attended the Chicago Musical College and later the Boguslawski School of Music. She began as a concert pianist; then led her own orchestra, and was a singer and pianist in night clubs, on radio, and in theatres. She was married to Milton Feldman, a Hollywood movie producer.
Carpenter frequently collaborated with songwriter Lenny Adelson, as well as Kim Gannon on writing songs, with her composing the music and them writing the lyrics.
