Swedish conductor, born 4 April 1918 in Malmö, Sweden and died 13 February 2005 in New York City, New York, USA. Conductor and pianist. He is considered one of the foremost Swedish conductors. During his five-decade career, he conducted almost all the leading orchestras and in almost all the leading opera houses in the world. Trained in Stockholm, Dresden, London and Paris. Conductor at the Swedish Royal Theatre 1944-60, Court Conductor in 1953. Became head of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 1963 and a professor at the university in 1964. Elected to KMA (Royal Swedish Academy of Music) in 1956. Appointed Chief Court Conductor in 1976. Appointed professor 1982.
