After a career as a saxophonist in dance bands, Jones co-founded the magazine "Jazz Music" in 1942 with Albert McCarthy and Charles Fox. In 1944, he began writing the column 'Collectors’ Corner' in "Melody Maker", joined the publication's staff full time the next year and remained there until 1982. He also sometimes provided photographs from his collection for record releases.
