Originally from Mississippi, Smitty relocated to St. Louis, Missouri where he performed regularly with many other local blues luminaries. Big Bad Smitty's 1991 release, Mean Disposition, was named to a list of the best folk recordings of the year by the Library of Congress. Smitty was featured on the cover of the May 1993 issue of Living Blues magazine. He died in Jackson, Mississippi on April 3, 2002, as a result of diabetes.
