Morton studied drama at Hofstra University on Long Island.
He was nominated for Broadway's 1974 Tony Award as Best Actor (Musical) for "Raisin." He also won a Theatre World Award for this role. Won NAACP Awards for his work in Equal Justice (1990) and Tribeca (1993). He has also directed and produced stage musicals and films.
