Ed Csupkay

German singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist (born 1965 in Bremen-Blockdiek) Csupkay (pronounced Tschupkai or Tshoupkai) grew up in Bremen where he played guitar in folk and punk bands while working as a longshoreman in the Bremen harbor and as a nightclub bouncer. In 1988, he rediscovered his childhood violin and played fiddle on the Rumble On The Beach album "Rumble". After moving to Berlin in 1991, Csupkay and his fiddle joined the Jever Mountain Boys on two titles of their 1994 CD "Bury The Bottle With Me". In 1996, his fiddle playing was featured on two titles of Meret Becker's CD "Nachtmahr". Csupkay also wrote two and played on three titles of Ben Becker's 1997 CD "Und Lautlos Fliegt Der Kopf Weg". In 2005, Csupkay acted in and wrote music for director Frank Castorf's version of Friedrich von Gagern's "Marterpfahl" at the Berliner Volksbühne theater. He also led the band at the annual Christmas Special hosted by actress Sophie Rois. On the 2008 album "Old South Jamboree" by Chip Hanna & The Berlin Three, Csupkay played both fiddle and mandolin. In 2011, he toured Southern Germany with the stage band of the bio-comedy "Johnny Cash - The Man in Black". In 2007, Csupkay released his own alt-country/contemporary folk album, "Das Tier In Mir". Now residing in Minden, Csupkay continues to perform, e.g., at the Weserlieder 2022 Open Air Minden. Apart from making music, Csupkay also co-owned the Berlin night club "Ex’n’Pop" (closed in 2016). In addition, he worked as tour manager of Motörhead, Anthrax, and Monster Magnet.
