"Sparkling blood on golden sand dipped in sunlight" — these are the national colors of Spain, and of its most popular and striking national feast — the ‘fiesta brava’ or bullfight. This spectacle of violence and courage, as explosive as a volcano and as set in its pattern as a classic ballet, is deeply rooted in the Spanish character and earth. Each Sunday noon off the season, at an appointed hour, a drama of life and death — at once a symbol and a macabre reality — is played before a passionate and unrelenting crowd.
For many people, this battle between man and beast seems unjust and repugnant — not sporting at all. But we must not forget that Spain does not consider the bullfight as sport! For them, it is rather a form of consecrated art, of long-standing and honorable tradition. Each actor of the drama has his precise role to play and is recognised for the classic quality of his execution.
Travelers to Spain who have had the good fortune to witness a bullfight in all its perfection, will never forget the color and beauty of the spectacle nor the almost indescribable tension that one undergoes the moment the drama reaches its climax — the ‘hora de verdad’. Perhaps Gautier was exaggerating when he wrote that this is "equal to all the dramas of Shakespeare." But one can't deny that this match between two noble and brave adversaries, one of whom must be conquered by the other, arouses in all their intensity the pity and terror that Aristotle called the definition of tragedy.
The music is an indispensable par of the pomp of the bullfight. The ‘toreros’ and their ‘cuadrillas’ make their first solemn entrance into the arena to the loud and resounding strains of the ‘banda taurina’. Each act of the drama is preceded by the traditional call on the trumpet and the roll of the drums. The music makes one's fever rise as the drama approaches its long awaited finale, and when the conquering ‘torero’ makes his triumphal turn around the arena, thanking all for the applause and gifts of flowers they have bestowed upon him, we hear once more above the noise of the crowd, this vibrant and pulsating music.
Nevertheless, the brilliant selection of traditional airs at the bullfight is dedicated to the other actor of the tragedy — to the noble bull of combat whose power, supreme beauty and indomitable courage is a thing of glory even in death. Bravo, Toro!
