Melvins and TAD were still on the independent circuit in 1991. Nirvana reached a much larger audience that fall, while Pearl Jam and Soundgarden took different routes. The result is twelve records with very different ideas about heavy guitar music.

Why these records sound so different
When major labels turned Seattle into an industry fixation during the winter of 1991 and 1992, most of these records were already in stores. Punk and metal were common ground. Psychedelia and hard rock shaped parts of the scene too. Bands shared stages and producers, but each wrote in its own way.[1][2]
The order follows the story. Seattle sits at the center. Gish came from Chicago; Pretty on the Inside was made in Los Angeles. Both were soon pulled into the wider use of the grunge label. Each title has a physical edition in Garimpa's catalog.
How Temple of the Dog came together
Chris Cornell wrote songs for Andrew Wood, the Mother Love Bone singer and his friend. He recorded them with Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament. Matt Cameron and Mike McCready joined the sessions, and Eddie Vedder also sang on the album. The project brought together musicians who were about to appear in Soundgarden and Pearl Jam.[6][1]
That same year, Gossard and Ament released Ten with Pearl Jam; McCready and Vedder were also in the band. Cornell and Cameron stayed with Soundgarden for Badmotorfinger. Ten favors broad melodies and interlocking guitars. Badmotorfinger is heavier, with rhythms that keep shifting under the riffs.[4][5][6]

The Grunge Years
The Grunge Years arrived on Sub Pop on September 1, 1991. Nevermind followed on the 24th. Nirvana opens the compilation, alongside L7, TAD, Mark Lanegan, Screaming Trees, Mudhoney, and others. The title shows that Sub Pop was already using grunge as a name that could carry the Seattle scene beyond the Pacific Northwest.
Chicago and Los Angeles
Gish came out May 28. Smashing Pumpkins were a Chicago band, and Butch Vig produced the album's mix of heavy guitars and psychedelia. In Los Angeles, Kim Gordon and Don Fleming produced Hole's debut, Pretty on the Inside. Its noise and punk abrasion land in a different place. Both records entered the broader grunge conversation even though neither came from Seattle.[11][13]
