The PARC (Palo Alto Research Center), formerly known as Xerox PARC, is an American R&R facility established in 1970 by Xerox Corporation's chief scientist Jacob E. Goldman (1921—2011) and located in Palo Alto, California. Owned and operated as Xerox division for the first 32 years, Palo Alto Research Center, Inc. became an independent corporate entity in 2002. Xerox donated PARC to SRI International in 2023.
Unlike the Xerox Corp's New York research lab in Rochester dedicated to refining and optimizing the current photocopying products, Goldman's trailblazing Advanced Scientific & Systems Laboratory in California focused on cutting-edge emerging technology. Among numerous revolutionary personal computing concepts invented at Xerox PARC are the personal computer and "ubuquitious computing" (i.e., computing permanently available anytime), the earliest cursor-pointing device created by Douglas Engelbart (1925—2013), the first graphical user interface (GUI) with skeuomorphic windows on a "desktop" and object-oriented programming envisioned by Alan Kay (b. 1940), bitmap computer graphics, laser printing, Ethernet networks, "e-ink" electronic paper, and the first-ever WYSIWYG text editor.
