Masao Kato

Masao Kato (加藤 まさを / かとう まさを, Katō Masao) Real name: Masao Kato (加藤 正男, Katō Masao) Other pseudonyms: Haruhiko Fujieda, Yoshio Hasu Dates: April 8, 1897 – November 1, 1977 (Aged 80) Masao Kato was a distinguished Japanese painter, poet, novelist, and illustrator. Born in Fujieda, Shizuoka Prefecture, he rose to prominence in 1919 while studying English Literature at Rikkyo University. He gained overnight fame with his postcard illustrations for Andersen's Fairy Tales and The Flower Spirit. From the late Taisho to early Showa era, Kato was a central figure in establishing the golden age of "lyrical painting" (jyojyoga), working alongside legendary artists such as Takehisa Yumeji, Kasho Takabatake, and Koji Fukiya. Beyond his visual art, he is widely celebrated as the lyricist for the iconic children's song "Tsuki no Sabaku" (Moon Desert), for which he drew inspiration from the beaches of Onjuku, Chiba Prefecture, where he spent time recuperating from tuberculosis.
