Originally from Charlottesville, Virginia and later moved to Maine. He started on guitar at eight and began banjo at thirteen. He won Banjo Championships in Virginia in 1974 & 1975. He won "Maine Instrumentalist of the Year Award" in 1991 & "New England Instrumentalist of the Year Award" in 1992.
