Rob Salmon is a New Zealand DJ, record producer and turntablist. He gained early recognition as a DMC DJ competitor and member of the 1990s rap group Urban Disturbance. Active primarily during the 1990s and 2000s, he is also associated with deep, moody forms of Tech House and Deep House. His musical background reflects early influence from New York and UK labels including Strictly Rhythm, Nu Groove, King Street Sounds, Junior Boys Own, R&S, UR, and Warp catalogs that shaped the sound he would later develop. Salmon emerged during a transitional moment in New York club culture, as House music expanded into more experimental and percussive directions. His early-2000s releases with NYC engineer Rob Rives (Wave Music) for Deep Dish’s Yoshitoshi Recordings positioned him among producers defining the city’s evolving Tech House sound. Later releases spanned multiple House styles: Deep House for Chez Music Afro-percussive tracks on Open Bar Music, and Soulful House for the French imprint UMR. He has collaborated with Paris-based jazz-soul vocalist Lady Bird and produced official remixes for UK new-wave group The Human League Though later stepping back from studio work, Salmon’s catalog remains part of the early-2000s New York Tech House and Deep House record history.
