Swedish metal/punk vocalist and teacher, born on October 16, 1972 in Helga Trefaldighet, Uppsala, Uppland, and passed away on September 16, 2025 in Härlanda, Göteborg, Västergötland. Tomas Lindberg, nicknamed Tompa, grew up in Billdal, Gothenburg Municipality from 1977. He became the vocalist and frontman of the band Grotesque in 1988 and At the Gates in 1990. The death metal band was founded in 1990 in Gothenburg and is considered a pioneer in the genre and for the melodic metal sound of the West Coast. Tomas "Tompa" Lindberg's vocals were distinctive for the band. Slaughter of the Soul from 1995 became the band's major breakthrough album, where several critics commented on Lindberg's unique singing style. 'Singer Tomas Lindberg employs a choked scream here that actually makes the lyrics somewhat comprehensible. It not only gives the music a more human touch but also closely resembles the type of singing that became popular among screamo bands in the American punk underground scene,' wrote Steve Huey for AllMusic, for instance. At the Gates disbanded for the first time in 1996 due to differences of opinion but reformed again in 2007. Lindberg also fronted other bands such as Nightrage, The Great Deceiver, The Crown, Disfear, Skitsystem, and the grindcore supergroup Lock Up. He was ranked 30th out of 50 on the list of the greatest frontpersons in metal history by the record label Roadrunner Records. Eventually, Tomas Lindberg moved from Gothenburg to Västervik, where he attempted to support himself as a freelance musician. This proved to be challenging. Instead, he began substituting as a teaching assistant and leisure educator at a school, where he encountered students who offered him trust and respect. These were students he connected with and was able to teach. This experience was so rewarding that he decided to apply for a teacher education program, from which he graduated in 2010. The music scene provided Lindberg advantages in the teacher-student relationship, but it also worked in the opposite direction. His time as a teacher made him more reflective and analytical. Instead of encountering locked situations, which often occurred previously when there were differing opinions in At the Gates, they could calmly write riffs until everyone was satisfied. Lindberg had learned this especially from his teacher education. It was in December 2023 that Tomas 'Tompa' Lindberg, the singer of At the Gates, was first diagnosed with cancer in the mouth and palate. He subsequently underwent a major surgery, which was followed by two months of radiation. In August 2025, the band announced on Instagram that Tomas Lindberg was ill with cancer. Tomas Lindberg passed away in the following month at the age of 52.
